Hägerbrand is an artist with strong roots in the Åland-Karelian region, and his new work is a wonderful representation of where we came from and how that origin makes us who we are today. His experience is broad, having played on the same venues as Nirvana and having written music for national theaters and award winning films. But it’s his solo songs through which he really connects with his audience. He is back with a new EP, “Sjögräs vol. 2,” after having been nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize. The four-song set moves away from complex metaphors to focus on the real and truthful moments that happen in our everyday lives.
The music on this EP is about the sense of navigating through life and the changes we all go through as we grow up. Hägerstrand examines the conflict between the desire for freedom and the heavy burden of being accountable for oneself. The basic theme of these songs is that the most important things about being human are in modest, quiet moments, not huge, noisy events. It’s a project that celebrates honesty and authenticity and shows how we’re all trying to find our place in a world that may often feel chaotic and unclear.
The song “Egen lägenhet” is about the big step to have your own flat to live in. The music is about the good and the bad that comes with this kind of liberty. There is so much pride in having your own front door, but there is also a sense of loneliness that may creep in when you are alone within those four walls. It means home is not just a building, it is a place that expresses how we feel inside. The song is about that quiet moment when you realize you’re finally on your own, when you go from being part of a group to living in your own little universe.
The next song, “Ett litet liv,” is about the beauty of a simple and tranquil life. It has an important message: you do not have to perform enormous, famous things to live a life that matters. The song is really down-to-earth, very peaceful, reminding us that an everyday life is nonetheless full of deep thoughts and meaning. It notes that sometimes we feel the need to be “extraordinary” so much that we miss the fun of just being here in this moment. This song is about respect for those who chose to walk quietly, that there is so much dignity in living with a kind heart and a simple purpose.
Through the song “I lagens namn,” the music explores how individual freedom meets the restrictions of society. It depicts that sensation of being watched or assessed by regulations and inflexible expectations that determine our behavior. There is a clash between what our own hearts tell us is right and outside forces that want us to conform to the majority. It’s a solemn and contemplative song, searching for truth in a world that can seem cold or cruel at times. It considers how a human being can be themselves, even if they are forced to live inside the boundaries defined by government.
The EP ends with the song “Ring min mamma,” on the profound bond between a kid and a mother. It’s about how life may be so rough sometimes that we have to look back to our beginning. Even as adults we still have moments when we feel little and insecure, and this song depicts the wonderful consolation of hearing the voice of the person who has known us from the moment we were born. It teaches us that asking for help, or revealing that we struggle, is not a sign of weakness but a very necessary and natural element of being human.
Overall, “Sjögräs vol. 2” is an album that is more honest than fancy. Hägerstrand has a knack for making ordinary tasks like moving into a flat or making a phone call feel extremely significant. He takes us on a journey of growing up, of feeling our feelings, the actual hardships, and the modest successes of a relatable life. The EP leaves us with a sense of the fact that, even if our lives may seem small or insignificant, the people we love and the places that are ours are the roots of a life that is real and happy.
